ISO-2022 (also known as ECMA-35) is a standard for representing characters from multiple character sets using escape sequence to switch between them. I have written a summary, and also designed an encoding called MTF-8 that is based on ISO-2022 but is modeless like UTF-8 (see RFC 2279).
